Chinese investors putting their money into Waterloo student housing

The excellent reputations of local universities have wealthy Chinese families investing in student housing projects in Waterloo.

Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo are well-known in China and to Chinese-Canadians. Both attract international students every year.

Tech Triangle‘s insight:

“There’s a lot of wealthy people in China that are looking to diversify,” said Justin McFadden, executive director of economic development at the City of Waterloo.  “Because of students they’re kind of drawn to this area.”

The city’s economic development department is hoping interest in housing could develop into something more.

He said the city receives weekly visits from Chinese delegations.

When investors arrive to meet with the city, McFadden said, economic development staff showcase areas to invest beyond housing
